This morning at 11:32, Station 1 was tasked by JRCC to respond to a Mayday call for a vessel with 58 people on board that had run aground at Starboat Cove (East of Lighthouse Park)
SAR 1 was on scene with the weekend duty crew at 11:51. Along with theCanadian Coast Guard (CCG) Loredo Sound, Siyay and Kits 1. They were also assisted by SAR 2 and theVancouver Police Department (VPD) Marine Unit.
The CCG crew members boarded the vessel, assessed the injured passengers and its condition, and determined that the most prudent decision would be to keep the uninjured passengers on board and escort the vessel back to Coal Harbour.
The crew of SAR 1 wants to commend all of the units that came to assist. This had the makings of a very difficult situation.
Coxswain Roger Wagstaff wanted to give particular commendation to the on-scene coordinator who did an impressive job managing all the assets available in a constantly evolving scenario.
